Ball Valves
Valves are pipe fittings, which can be used for changing the flow direction, regulating pressure, Closing or Opening of pipe line. Many types of valves are available in markets viz. Gate Valve, Globe Valve, Butterfly Valve, Ball Valves etc. Each type of valve are suitable for a certain application depending up on their construction parameters and pressure ratings.
Ball valves are generally shut off valve which regulates the flow of a liquid or gas by means of a rotary ball having a bore. By rotating the ball by 90 degrees around its axis, the medium can either flow through the ball or can be blocked. In comparison to globe valves, the pressure drop across ball valves are negligible, so they are generally not used for the purpose of pressure regulation.
Construction of Ball Valves
The ball valve mainly consists of five main parts and operates in two different modes. The valve stem (1) is connected to the ball (4) and is operated either manually or automatically. The ball is supported and sealed by the ball valve seat (5) and there are O - rings (2) around the valve stem, all are inside the valve housing (3). The ball has a bore through it, when the valve stem is turned a quarter-turn the bore is either may open to allow the through flow or close to prevent the flow.
