Fuel Hoses

The hoses used for carrying Mineral oil, fuels viz. gasoline, kerosene, oil and are usually composed of materials like Nitrile Rubber [NBR], Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer [EPDM], PTFE Polytetrafluoroethylene [PTFE]. The hoses are generally reinforced in the inner surface with either stainless steel or polyester fabric braiding for increasing the safety and life of hoses. The hoses are generally extruded and also reinforced with fine grades of GI wire on the outside.

Generally, PVC and other related plastics are not used for making fuel hoses owing to their easy deformation in high temperature environments, which may result in leak or rupture. The plasticizers used in PVC hoses could melt in the presence of oil resulting in stiffening of hose, resulting in the breaking of reinforcing or even the cracking of the either cracking or bursting of PVC hoses.

Materials like natural rubber and PVC are more reactive when exposed to UV rays, extreme weather conditions etc. While materials like EPDM, Silicone, PTFE etc have better stability when exposed to UV rays and all.

Desirable Properties

  • It should have least affinity for gas diffusion.
  • It must be Chemically inert.
  • Resistance to UV.
  • It must have a good Environmental stability

Applications

The Fuel hoses finds applications in automobiles, Machines, I.C Engines etc. for carrying of Fuel, Lubricants, acids air etc.
